The sow farrowing crate, also known as the high-bed farrowing pen, primarily consists of a sow positioning frame, piglet fencing, piglet slatted flooring, sow feed trough, and piglet supplement trough. The sow positioning frame serves to control the sow's free movement area and lying position. The positioning frames between the sow farrowing crates are equipped with barriers to prevent piglets from being crushed, trampled, or injured. The length of the positioning frame is generally 2.1-2.3 metres, the width is 0.6 metres, and the height is 1.0 metre. The lowest bar of the positioning frame is welded with curved posts to protect piglets without hindering their ability to nurse. The sow feed trough and waterer are located in front of the positioning frame.
Piglet pens provide a space for piglets to move around and prevent them from escaping. There are two types of pens: slatted and partitioned. Slatted pens facilitate ventilation and observation but are less effective for disease prevention. Partitioned pens are more effective for disease prevention but are more expensive. The piglet pen measures 2.0-2.3 metres in length, 1.7-1.8 metres in width, and 0.5-0.6 metres in height, with bar spacing not exceeding 40 millimetres. The piglet feed trough and waterer are installed at the rear of the pen, with the manure accumulating in the rear manure collection area. The sow farrowing bed floor is composed of plastic flooring and cast iron flooring.
